ARNPEI Council Meeting February 18, 2011

Board Development:

Becky Gosbee provided an update on the new Canadian Council of Registered Nurse Regulators (CCRNR) to focus on regulatory issues separate from CNA.  Founding members are CRNBC, CARNA, CRNM, and CNO.  Draft bylaws have been developed with plans to become incorporated as a national body.  ARNPEI Council has agreed to be a signator on the application for incorporation.

President’s Report:

The President provided an update on the November 2010 CNA Board meeting.  As part of the new strategic plan, expert commissioners will be added to the Board.  CNA is currently developing an election platform in anticipation of a possible federal election.  A position statement and joint framework on skills mix is in progress.

Copies of CNA/RNAO’s publications on Nurse Fatigue, October 2010 Report of CNA’s Roundtable: Nursing care delivery models and staff mix - Using evidence in decision-making and the Final Report of the Model of Care Initiative in NS (MOCINS) were circulated.

ARNPEI submitted a formal response to Health PEI’s new Medical Staff Bylaws, part of the provincial health reforms to provide one set of integrated medical bylaws instead of the current seven.  Within these bylaws NPs will now have admitting privileges.  CNPS also provided a submission.

UPEI Student Representative - Amanda Perry has resigned as student representative; Council approved Trevor Cudmore as the new student member.

UPEI Accreditation by Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) - Accreditation is scheduled for the week of March 14.  ARNPEI’s Coordinator of Regulatory Services has been granted Observer Status.

Annual General Meeting (Rodd Charlottettown Hotel, April 29, 2011) - Council approved three resolutions for presentation at the AGM:
(a) increase in the CRNE fee from $400 to $500;
(b) increase to the IEN application fee from $115 to $500;
(c) approval of revised Standards for Nursing Practice.
The educational theme is Nurse Fatigue.

ARNPEI Model of Care Committee - In response to the 2010 motion a power point presentation will be provided outlining the committee’s activities.

Professional Conduct Review - An update on #2009-003; #2010-001; #2010-002; #2010-003; and #2011-001 were provided.

Public Relations Committee - Maureen Kerr, Social Media Strategist, Kerr Consulting, gave a presentation on social media. The feasibility of ARNPEI having a facebook page is also being investigated.
