Cultural Awareness Module

The Cultural Awareness Module can be taken by the mentor of an internationally education nurse (IEN) or any nurse working on a unit or in a facility employing an IEN.

On completion of this module the nurse will understand some of the challenges the IEN may have encountered prior to commencing work on Prince Edward Island. They will be knowledgeable of some terms associated with cultural awareness / sensitivity. They will have information about several challenges faced by IENs as they transition into a new culture and work environment and a number of the differences between nursing in Canada versus nursing in other countries as advised by IENs. They will also be made aware of the different expectations of nurses and patients in Canada versus their home country. Effective communication between the mentor and the IEN and other nurses working in a unit / facility is emphasized.

This module is for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses working on P.E.I.   The module takes between 30 minutes – 1 hour to complete on line. On completion the nurse will be e-mailed a continuing education certificate for their professional portfolio.

The Cultural Awareness Module is available at www.healthpei.ca/nursingeducation
