Orientation to the Canadian Health Care System for the internationally educated nurse
The Orientation to the Canadian Health Care system is developed to support the internationally educated nurse (IEN) as they transition into work and life on P.E.I and Canada.
An IEN is any nurse trained outside of Canada. It is a program for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses beginning work on P.E.I. The program provides information on the role of the federal and provincial governments in health care in Canada. It also offers information about the Department of Health and Wellness, Health PEI and the programs and services it offers to Islanders. There is information given on the electronic health record, collaborative care, and collaborative model of care and there is a professional practice review for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. Two supplementary education modules also speak to the nursing code of ethics, social norms in Canada, the importance of effective communication and culture shock that the IEN may experience as they transition into life here on P.E.I.
The program takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to complete on line. On completion the IEN will be e-mailed a continuing education certificate for their professional portfolio.
