ARNPEI Council Meeting, September 18, 2009
Paul Boudreau provided an overview of ARNPEI’s Nursing Education Program Advisory Committee and ARNPEI’s mandate to approve the UPEI School of Nursing.
An update on the new model of care was provided. ARNPEI sits on two working
groups - Communication and Education. The LPN education program (health assessment, introduction to pharmacology and medication administration) has begun. To present education for the RN has not been started. The go-live date for implementation is January 2010.
A call for nominations for the CNA Memorial Book has been received.
CNA will also be offering Orders of Merit (clinical practice, education, administration, research and policy). Nominations for the Order of Merit and Memorial Book are due January 31. Information will be circulated to each workplace. Members are encouraged to forward nominations to ARNPEI. Nominations will then be submitted to CNA by ARNPEI Council.
ARNPEI Policies/Discussion Paper
ARNPEI has developed a document entitled RN/LPN Utilization Within a Renewed Model of Care: A decision-making framework. Exemplary Care: Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses Working Together, developed in the spring by ARNPEI, the LPN Association, and the PEI Health Sector Council, is being received well. Additional efforts are being developed to further promote this document.

Mental Health Nursing
Dr. Gloria McInnis-Perry and Bev Thompson reviewed the findings of a preliminary study conducted by RNs working in mental health on PEI. They are planning to replicate the study to validate their findings and requested support from ARNPEI. ARNPEI is supportive in principle of this study. Gloria and Bev will approach ARNPEI with specific types of support to be requested at that time.
