ARNPEI Council Meeting, November 13, 2009

Board Development 

Paul Boudreau provided an overview on the National Nursing Practice Standards project.  Prior to this initiative Nursing Practice Standards were developed by each jurisdiction.  Paul will be having a focus group December 9, 2009 to receive additional input from members. 

President’s Report 

ARNPEI is a member of the Education Build Team for the new Model of Care.  ARNPEI has met with the Hon. Doug Currie, Minister of Health, and Glen Doyle, Manager, HHR, Department of Health, to discuss nursing concerns.

Mary Hughes is ARNPEI’s representative on the PEI Health Sector Council.  The issue of quality of work-life has always been a concern for ARNPEI.  Mary has been working with the Health Sector Council to develop a questionnaire on quality of work-life which will be mailed to each ARNPEI member.  The Health Sector Council has developed a poster as well as bookmarks containing the general principles from the Exemplary Care Document.  A bookmark will be mailed to each member. 

Recognition of RNs 

ARNPEI will be sending congratulations to the graduates of Critical Care / Emergency Research to Action Initiative.  Congratulations will also be sent to Vanda DesRoches, Clinical Development Nurse for Prince County Hospital, on receiving the Dr. Tom Moore Award for outstanding service. 

CNA Biennial Convention 2010 (Innovation in Action:  the Power of Nursing)

The CNA Biennium will be held in Halifax, June 7-9, 2010.   ARNPEI will be sponsoring 10 members to attend.  Information about the Biennium along with a form to be entered in a draw will be included in the mail-out to members in December 2009. 

ARNPEI Fall Conference

The 2009 Fall Conference will be held November 20, 2009 at the Dutch Inn.  The keynote speaker is Suzanne Gordon who will address Nursing: The Mind at Work.

Canadian Nurses Foundation

Dr. Margaret Munro updated Council on CNF’s “Nursing 4.0” fund-raising campaign and has asked ARNPEI for assistance.  The plan is to raise 4 million dollars over the next four years - one million from nurses and the remainder from donors outside of nursing.   Dr. Munro is encouraging more RNs to be donors, and she is also seeking corporate sponsors.  Dr. Munro will have a booth at the ARNPEI Fall Conference. 

PEI Cancer Society

Representatives from the Cancer Society are requesting ARNPEI support on a public awareness campaign to increase knowledge of and participation in breast, cervical, and colorectal screening among recommended target groups.  ARNPEI will be working with the Cancer Society to conduct a survey of nurses working in community clinic settings.
