ARNPEI Council Meeting, February 20, 2009
Prince County Hospital will be conducting a pilot project to evaluate the effectiveness of using unregulated workers to assist in personal care activities. The worker will be called a Patient Care Worker (PCW). ARNPEI will be developing a regulatory framework on the RN role for delegation and supervision of the unregulated worker.
ARNPEI will be working with the LPN Association and the Health Sector Council to develop a document on RNs and LPNs working together in PEI.
The theme for National Nursing Week, May 11-17, 2009, is Nursing: You can’t live without it!
National Malaria Day is April 25, 2009.
ARNPEI will purchase nets ($600) to provide help to 100 families. Letters will be forwarded the Minister of Health, the Mayors of Charlottetown, Stratford, Cornwall and Summerside and the PEI members of the Senate in Ottawa to promote awareness of Malaria Day.
Letters of congratulations have been forwarded to the PEI nursing student representative on the success of the Canadian Nursing Students Association national conference hosted by UPEI January 27-31, in Charlottetown and to the Minister of Health on the release of Corpus Sanchez report. ARNPEI’s letter to the editor in support of a stroke unit was published in The Guardian and The Journal Pioneer in January.
The Office of the Health Recruitment and Retention Secretariat is working on a recruitment and retention program for RNs. ARNPEI has been consulted.
ARNPEI has been informed that the Minister of Health has approved Marion Murphy as Council’s public representative until November 2010.
ARNPEI Annual General Meeting
ARNPEI’s Annual Meeting will be held at the Charlottetown Hotel on May 1, 2009. The educational session will be provided by Kathryn Hannah who will speak on Canadian Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care (C-HOBIC). Bev Carr will be awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award.

Two new position statements were approved - Administration of Medication by LPNs in Long Term Care and Working Extra Hours.
